How To Live In Your House During A Remodel

Let’s face it, remodeling your home can be stressful. So it’s important to remind yourself from time to time that this remodeling period will be so worth it, when you are living in a home that you love. Check out our Remodel Survival Guide below to keep your stress under control while living in your home during a remodel.

Know Your Contractors

Before the work begins, talk to your general contractor to find out how they set up for a remodel. Be sure to ask questions like what rooms you’ll be losing, how they will compartmentalize the space, and how they plan to keep the space clean. Once you know which rooms will be used, you can make a plan to get your belongings into another room.

Set up Temporary Rooms

Losing rooms during a remodel can be difficult, but creating ‘temporary rooms’ is a life saver. If you are remodeling your kitchen, try making your garage or basement into a mini-kitchen. If you are remodeling your living room, pick a room in the house to act as your temporary gathering space. Work closely with your contractor, interior designer or architect, like us, to utilize the space you’re not remodeling.

Designate Storage Space

Using a storage unit, attic space, or your basement will help get some of the belongings you don’t use every day out of the way. This keeps things simple, which is crucial when remodeling your home. A remodel adds a whole new level of commotion into your home, so keeping your home as clutter free as possible will help things be more organized and under control.

Keep Your Family in Mind

If you have little ones (with two legs or four) running around the house, make sure everyone knows the safety protocol. Keep in close contact with your contractor and project managers, and communicate any important information to your family, such as when and where the workers will be. Please be mindful that pets can be scared during a remodel, so make sure they have a ‘safe place’ to go during the work to prevent them from running off.

Be Realistic!

Be honest with yourself. If you know that living at home during construction is not realistic for your family, look to find a place to stay temporarily.
